On a Monday Morning

We’re sticking with more recent fare with another of Cyril Tawney’s songs of which, Jon says, “I don’t remember where I first heard this – it’s such a stalwart of singing sessions. Since going pro I’ve always felt a bit guilty singing it at a late night singing session, since one of the great perks of being a musician is a Monday morning lie-in.” I’m sure you’ve earned a few Jon and it sounds like Cyril did too. I don’t think I need to expand much here as I’m sure many of you will wear a wry smile in sympathy as well. It’s all pretty self explanatory, but I think the concertina adds a nice wooziness.

As it happens Jacob was up at 6 this morning so not so inappropriate after all…

  2. Katie A says:

Parents everywhere can sympathize – no mention in the song of Cbeebies or Milkshake to help with that one though…….
Did enjoy the song anyway – thanks!

  3. Jane Ramsden says:

Lovely concertina, and a song about so much more than just a Monday morning. Really liked the haunting tune to this one. Nicely sung, Jon!

  4. SRD says:

I think the etymological discussions and the voting system are taken too seriously. 😀

Jon, you have to do “Five Foot Flirt”! You have to!

I cannot download your free A Folk Song A Day mp3s. This problem has been going on for some time. I use IE 8 and the RSS feed.

Do you know please please when this glitch will be fixed?

I’ve loved every Cyril Tawney song I’ve heard. He’s the real deal. Beautifully sung (again!) Jon, & wonderful, haunting & tailing-off concertina.

  11. Diana says:

Not many people like Monday mornings. This song sums it up very well as to why we don’t like Mondays. Very nicely sung and the concertina certainly help to give it a plaintive air.

Huzzah….another lovely Monday morning ….let’s get stuck into this lovely fresh week and really get stuff done.

  13. Linda says:

    O for longer weekends….

  14. Helen says:

First heard this by the Unthanks, great song.

  15. Old Muzza(N.W.Surrey UK) says:

Well boys and girls………one compensation of getting to a certain age is that weekends disappear and the days all run into each other………Monday?……if you asked me what day it is, I would have to look at a calendar (or ask Matron!)

  16. OldMuzza(NWSurrey UK) says:

I’ve progressed…….weekends have disappeared…..hard pressed to remember what year it is these days!!!

  17. Well you had me fooled ~ I looked at the title and thought Cyril Tawney ~ then the concertina tune introduction sent me to traditional smoothy song [not sure which one].This is the song Martin Carthy claims was taught to him by Cyril in his bedroom at a festival ~ not too sure about the approach to the “feelings” expressed though clearly well sung
