Jon says “So here we are. Song 365. It’s possibly not the most appropriate farewell song given the sting in the tale. Over the years there were a fair few regulars who got themselves barred from the Half Moon – I always think of them when I sing this! But it is goodbye from me. It’s been a real pleasure singing to you all this last year. I’d like to thank a few people who have been doing the really hard work – Andy Bell who has done the bulk of the recording and mixing, Ben Bowdler at Proper who has done all the technical web stuff, including manually uploading each individual podcast. A particular thanks to Simon Holland who has been your host on this site – writing introductions to all the songs and keeping an eye on all your comments. It’s been great for me to read Simon’s intros every day and then read all the various ensuing postings. I’d like to thank Steve Kersley at Proper who encouraged me to make what was a fairly mad idea, into a reality. I’d like to thank EFDSS for all their support and encouragement. Lastly but most importantly I’d like to thank you all for listening and commenting on the site. I’m hoping that A Folk Song A Day may continue in some form so I look forward to joining in the conversation with someone else doing the singing! See you around. All the best, Jon.”

I’ll add my thanks to Jon for an inspiring and extraordinary journey into the world of folk song. This is a massive achievement that I feel privileged and proud to have been a part of. I’ve certainly learnt a lot, but there’s so much more to discover. Thanks to everyone for your contributions, opinions, comments and for putting me right where needed. For once I genuinely feel at a loss for words, although this bittersweet song seems a perfect end. I must just give you a final link to Mainly Norfolk and offer special thanks to Reinhard in particular, for his outstanding resource that has more often than not been my first call in researching these songs. I’ll see some of you at Cecil Sharp House and promise to enjoy the evening on behalf of those that can’t make it. Thank you all, Simon.

Hi Muzza, how lovely to see a message from you me dear. You are in demand though even if you retired. Sorry you did not make the short list. Better luck next time. Did you manage to see to Teignmouth this year and did it stay dry for you?
Not like last time the wind and rain. Do enjoy your Boxing Day. I keep popping on most days to see if there are new messages. Did not expect any today yet there you were. Don’t forget to keep looking in here and you will continue to get some responses. Linda comes on very often as well. Also Jane has been known too also.

  2. Linda says:

Hi everybody, Sorry you didn’t make the short list Muzza . Colin sends you Christmas greeting. Have sent you an e-card it should be in your emails. Merry Christmas to Diana and Jane.

  3. Diana says:

Hi Linda, thank tou for your e-card. So lovely to receive. Hope you both have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year. Since LUuas was born haven’t been out to see folks like Bellowhead. He went to Portmeiron for a music festival so better luck in the future.

  6. Diana says:

Oh you michievlous little elves, dancing away and doing such acrobatic moves. Well done the pair of you. Also endorse your message a Merry Christmas to all.

  7. Linda says:

Hope you’ve saved some energy for boxing day Muzza!!!!
    Have a merry Christmas.

  8. old muzza says:

That Janey………..wot’s she like…I ask yer. You should see her and the Elf sisters giving it wellie on her FB page.
I seem to have survived the rain and wind with only one session of clambering around in the loft putting buckets under several drips….had to turn the radio up so that I could get to sleep and stop worrying that the old place would flood…must get it fixed in the summer.
Hey…we have passed the winter solstice and we are cartwheeling our way to lovely Spring and Summer days….hold that thought(or cat) ladies.

  9. Brad says:

Just came back to let John know that the original project is working. In 2010 my local club in SW London had maybe 4 singers nights a year, no floor ssingers otherwise and guitars mandatory. Ten songs were all I needed.

Having moved to E. Sussex, the local club is very much a singers club. Two 45 minute slots for floor singers every week. Sweating on learning a song every fortnight! I have credited the site every time I have used it.

I am now getting “gazumped” on songs from this site and having to prepare plan B and plan C!

Sang “Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer” for the second time in the area. Those who had heard it the first time managed to join in the “fugued” chorus successfully and it was declared “We must adopt that”

Well Done John, it is beginning to spread out.

  10. Diana says:

I thought you and Janey did well as the elves, quite energetic the pair of you. Sorry about your leaks and you must get them fixed asap. It is a worry expecially with the weather we have been experiencing reecently. The weather has gone haywire, snow in Egypt and other hot places. Annyway take care of yourself dear MUzza and keep looking in here for messages.

  11. Old Muzza says:

Hi Diana…….just popped in to wish you and all the regulars a Happy New Year…and to suggest to Brad that he gets himself on Youtube like wot Jan & I did……….and don’t forget to enter the 2014 Islington folk club TRAD2MAD competition…I’d better do my entry early.IN CASE SOMETHING UNTOWARD befalls me. Spring can not be far away.

  12. Diana says:

HAPPY NEW YEAR MUZZA. WISHING YOU ALL THE BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR NEXT ENTRY.
mORE TOMORROW ONLY ALL THE LIGHTS HAVE GONE, BUT NOT THE POWER FORTUNATELY. No light in the computer room so typing by torchlight. Til next time.

  13. old Muzza says:

Hi Diana……Huzzah…..all the comments have come up….I checked on the 1st and only 168 appeared although 170 shown at the top.Hope that your lights fixed now…my roof will have to wait until the fixer bloke can get up there without being blown off.
I can type in the dark…I went to night school

  14. Diana says:

Ho ho ho Muzza – night school. Yes lights working again so no excuse for typing errors today. Hope the roof chappie isn’t too long cos these winds have been horendous. The messages seem to get though eventually although not always when you expect them. So keep it up whilst we can eh?

  15. Jane Ramsden says:

Happy New Year, one and all…. only I do not know anyone called Old Muzza who keeps hinting at not being around & his possible demise. I only know HUGE-ly hilarious and ever-youthful musical Muzza, so HNY to him, when he gets back down off his windswept, leaking roof!

Here’s a clip of Walk of Faith from Kiki Dee and her Carmelo (Luggeri – master instrumentalist and arranger). I saw them just before Christmas at the Live Room in Saltaire, at the last gig of her ’50 years in the business’ tour, appropriately in her home town – and mine – Bratfud! Keep the faith, folksters!

  16. Diana says:

Yes who is this old Muzza Jane, don’t believe I know him either. Kiki Dee hardly looks different when you think of all those years. Glad you enjoyed your night out. Do hope the roof is ixed and no more leaks by now Muzza.

  17. Diana says:

And Jane will send the DVD as soon as I get more brown envelopes. Thought I had some then remembered I used two for a certain calendar.

  18. old Muzza says:

    A supply of Brown envelopes……….
what on earth do you gals get up to….the mind boggles

  19. Diana says:

Oh Muzza have we have your mind in overdrive? We exchange DVD’s etc. Nothing sinister so no more fretting.

  20. Jane Ramsden says:

Thanks for Primeval New World dvd, Diana; arrived yesterday in BROWN envelope – lol – & I went out and bought a new tv/dvd combi to play it on, as my old one has ‘brokken dahn’ as we say round ‘ere!

YOUNG Muzza, when are you going to advertise yersen appropriately… if you sent me an address, I could send you ALL SORTS in BROWN envelopes! Hahahahahaha!

  21. Diana says:

Wonder what Muzza thinks arrives in BROWN envelopes Jane. Are we missing something here do you think?

  22. old Muzza(N.W surrey.UK) says:

Now ….who’s birthday is it today (21st)…..A Clue:sends Jane Brown envelopes

  23. Diana says:

Happy birthday Muzza, I remembered from last year with us being so close together.

  24. Old Muzza(N.W.Surrey-UK) says:

I am intrigued to see what post and date will appear when I push the ‘submit ;button…how on earth have we got all the December /January comments of passed years jumbled in…..
I suppose dear old AFSAD didn’t want to finish without a bit of a flourish…………..NOW……….will it chug on for another years…..and is Simon head down.. asleep on the pc keyboard and is Jon frozen in time facing that big ol’ microphone with those fairy lights still around the mirror……. dimming as the battery runs out

  25. Old Muzza(N.W.Surrey-UK) says:

Well……..today is significant for being the day that Cecil Sharp died in 1859.
He and his colleagues did so much to record all those old folk songs for we folkies to enjoy. He managed to get folk songs introduced into the school curriculum around 1909 but around 1960, some misguided authority decided that children didn’t need folk songs in their lives and so a much loved tradition was lost.
I have had personal indication of the shared tradition when going round old folks homes with the morris men and all the folk knew the songs and the words and were clearly delighted at the memories that were invoked…………the new generation of ‘old folk’ (coming after me!)…will not have that common school link.
    Thank you Cecil and friends.

  26. Old Muzza(N.W.Surrey-UK) says:

    forgot to add this bit
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecil_Sharp

  27. Linda says:

@Muzza hopefully this link will bring a smile and the knowledge that all is not lost assuming the link works click on schools when you get onto the Soundpost site……http://www.soundpost.org.uk/royal-traditions/coming-up/ 24/06/2016 ?

  28. Old Muzza(N.W.Surrey UK) says:

Raise a glass to the memory of Cecil Sharp

  29. Linda says:

Will you be singing melodius tomorrow ??

  30. Old Muzza(N.W.Surrey UK) says:

Hi Lindy Lou…you betcha sweet bippy I will…..already have had a peek! via June 2014 archive!

  31. Linda says:

    Hi Muzza melodius day tomorrow……..

  32. Linda says:

Ooops wrong date ..are you singing melodius today..

  33. Old Muzza (NW Surrey-UK) says:

Ha…….if only we’d known then that Simon and colleagues had fixed it for us to continue to listen to such a great collection of folk songs…and ,poignantly, see again the comments from missing friends………Thank you again fellas.
Still bemused at the clutch of random Dec/Jan comments that appear at the head of the comments…….
Oooer….now got to click on the archives to jump to next song to start all over again…..yeeeessssss……..hope you’ll all join me on our next 365 day journey around the sun.

  34. OldMuzza(NWSurrey UK) says:

Ha…..I have peeked a day early…..and note that there is no facility to jump to the next song for 24th….did this happen last year?……is this the end or will we be able to jump to the archive and vault to the 24th…..DRAT….I have just caught a glimpse of my comment above from 2019 and that is exactly what we have to do HUZZAH…….(yet another senior moment!)

  35. Linda says:

I wonder if Jon knew when he started this how long it would carry on for …….while we have all been locked down it has been lovely to look back over the years at the comments and relive the highs and lows with friends still here and remembering abscent friends who are missed…….hopefully another year Muzza ……..

  36. OldMuzza (NWSurrey UK) says:

For everybody’s information….to continue listening and getting the tune for 24th June…..go to the archive at the top of the page…click on July(think it says 2014)
When that opens…..click older songs or until you get back to the earliest July song….click on its ‘comments ‘…….and that will enable you to work back to 24th June
    (damn clever these Chinese!)

  37. John Bryson says:

An absolutely lovely song – where do the years go ?

  38. GoodOldMuzza(NWSurreyUK) says:

Ha ….in case you are bemused by the inability to just click on tomorrows song…because it ain’t there!….I repeat the hints from yesteryear:-

“For everybody’s information….to continue listening and getting the tune for 24th June…..go to the archive at the top of the page…click on July(think it says 2014)
When that opens…..click older songs or until you get back to the earliest July song….click on its ‘comments ‘…….and that will enable you to work back to 24th June”

  39. DaftOldMuzza(NWSurreyuk) says:

    Ha.. Forgot a bit….
when you get onto July…you have to click on ‘comments’….. then work back to June 24th…or This link might work…
