Young Roger Esquire

Day three and Young Roger Esquire, which Jon learnt from Peter Ballamy, as he explains…

“A real Bellamy tour-de-force of which, this is a pale imitation. Fantastic song though.”

Also known as Roger The Miller and The Grey Mare, you’ll find a Mudcat thread or two here. The lyrics are slightly differently constructed to the version Jon sings and there are even some extra verses.

Love this song, very funny – never heard it before as I am new to folk music. A song a day is such a brilliant idea, there must be many people like me who are hearing these for the first time. I will be listening every day.

  2. I think Peter would have been delighted at this Jon. Magic!

  3. Carol N says:

    Blooming marvellous!

  4. edith lewis says:

A new song for me as well with a great ending. Keep them coming.

  5. Bee says:

Loving Roger’s ‘curly long hair’! And as Edith says – what a great ending!

  6. Claire Lloyd says:

Mr Bellamy would undoubtedly approve! A splendid rendition, well done Jon.

  7. Halewijn says:

Very exciting project, well done! Cannot wait for some Child ballads!

  8. Jane Ramsden says:

A great rendition! Mare envy is a terrible thing! Ha ha! And I enjoyed reading the informative comments from yesterday too. There is a wealth of folk knowledge behind some of the listeners that I don’t have, so thanks to all for the comments as well as to Jon for the songs.

  9. Dear Jon, Love your stuff! Are you going to sing some sea songs and shanties?

  10. Rachel says:

Sorry William. Jon Boden is well known for his refusal to sing sea-shanties.

  11. Alan Rosevear says:

Only a week in and I have been inspired to learn this half-remembered song properly.Your Song a day project is a tremendous idea – we’ll be remebering your inspiration for as many years afterwards.

  12. Maureen Musson says:

@Rachel – eh? Fire Marengo, Haul Away, Roll Her Down the Bay to Julianna – to name but three.

  13. muzza(s.e.England) says:

My father-in-law threw in his grey mare, a couple of cows, a camel with a limp and a flock of sheep….and still I suspected nothing!

  14. Jane Ramsden says:

@ Muzza: hehehehehehe… the camel should have been a giveaway…

  15. Mike New says:

don’t know this one. Glad to have had the opportunity to listen again.

    Music Mike
    🙂

  16. Ceryswyn says:

One of my favourite Bellamy songs, a beautiful rendition here 🙂

  17. Diana says:

Some people are never satisfied – talk about being greedy – anyway Young Roger got his just desserts – nothing! Well sung.

  18. Old Muzza(NW Surrey UK) says:

@Diana….got his just desserts eh!..that’ll teach him to trifle with a young lady’s affection.

  19. Diana says:

Welcome back Muzza. Hope the weekend wasn’t too wet, I know there was a lot of rain in the SW. How did your morris men fare? Did you entertain at the Triangle in Teignmouth? More to the point did you win?

  20. Diana says:

By the way Muzza I do appreciate your joke – trifle indeed!!!

  21. Jane Ramsden says:

Welcome back, Muzza, safe & sound and in one piece. Good joke pointed out by Diana there, or I might have missed it!

@ Simon: If my AFSAD archive notes are of any use to you, you are welcome to them on a memory stick if you tell me where to send.

I’ve had another quick delve into Andy Turner’s Folk Song A Week and this is his halfway-through synopsis. Nice mention of Jon’s project here, as well as Phil’s 52fs and a Liverpool project, which would also be worth exploring. Admitted under-representation of Northern songs, but think Jon gots that pretty well covered!

“So, six months in, I thought I’d have a quick review of the blog so far.

•I’ve posted 29 songs, although one of those was only 30 seconds long.
•I’ve classified 13 songs so far under Love Sex & Courtship and 5 under Crime & punishment. There have also been 6 carols
•Only 3 songs so far from the Copper Family, so plenty more to come from that source; another 3 from George Maynard and four from members of the Willett Family.
•Only 1 modern song, all the rest have been traditional. And of those traditional songs, 2 were Irish, all the others English – and pretty much all Southern English, at that (in fact all of them, I think, from the Southern half of England).

I have to say that, if anything, I’m now even more in awe of Jon Boden for managing to keep up A Folk Song A Day all through last year. A quick search suggests that few of the songs I’ve sung so far appeared on Jon’s blog; only these:

    •Week 3 – Saucy Sailor > Saucy Sailor
•Week 11 – Spencer the Rover > Spencer The Rover
•Week 17 – The Holly and the Ivy > The Holly & The Ivy
    •Week 21 – A Wager > Broomfield Hill
    •Week 26 – Lord Bateman > Lord Bateman

Not sure that proves anything, except there are clearly more than 365 folk songs out there!

Finally, a shout out to the other “Folk Song A Week” ventures: Phil Edwards’ 52 Folk Songs, and A Liverpool Folk Song A Week from “robotforaday”. It’s fun, isn’t it?”

Sure is fun! We’ve had loads on here!

  22. Sandy says:

“Just deserts” are no trifles to play with. The phrase is related to “deserve”, not to sweets.

  23. Diana says:

That is correct, “just desserts” means one gets what one deserves but it certainly is not a “desert.”

  24. Diana says:

Sandy you could be right – I have consulted my very old dictionary and desert has three meanings l – a desolate place 2 – to forsake and 3 – to deserve as punishment or reward. I bet that not a lot of people know that. You can learn something new every day.

Still Young Roger got what he deserved which was nothing..

  25. Old Muzza(NW Surrey UK) says:

@Diana….”His just deserts” is correct….as per your item No2 ‘to forsake’….
hence my’joke’ and that must have been tenuous if Janey struggled to get it!
    @Jane..posted 29 songs…..wasat mean? posted where?..
surely not Youtube with you singing ’em!
There are certainly loads of folk songs out there……I have a handwritten book of 300 songs that I like and have collected over many years of Folk on 2 and various tapes ..only a few have clashed with the AFSAD selection.

Jon has done it again…I Listened to Mike Harding 20thJune and what does JB sing…”Flow Sweet River Flow”…just as I get to the end of months of rehearsal of the same song and am about to stick it on Youtube….
I must say that my version is vastly different from Jon’s
i.e. he left a few verses out (or mixed and Matched them)

  26. Jane Ramsden says:

@ Muzza: Pay attention, lad! Did you miss Mr Boden’s pointer to Andy ‘Magpie-Gecko’ Turner’s A Folk Song a Week under ‘Fortune Turns the Wheel?’ If so, go here!

    http://afolksongaweek.wordpress.com/

Right up our street! No, of course it is not me doing the singing. I have enough on without trying to sort out the techie whizz world of uploading to YouTube, apart from not knowing more than 2 verses of any song – like Shirley Collins’ aunt – and anyway, I would not inflict an all-singing, all-dancing Ted on this unsuspecting world! No costumes, and I could not go ‘bear!’

  27. Diana says:

Muzza I am really upset now – you are not going on YouTube with “Sweet Thames flow solftly”. What a disappointment I was wound up for that. Like you say Jon and Sam’s version was a mix and match but Ewan MacColl wrote a final verse – albeit a sad one so perhaps their version was for the best.

A further blow if Jane is chickening out from her singing debut – I am sure she would be wonderful and then the two of you could duet. I cannot wait to see what a comeback she will make now.

  28. Jane Ramsden says:

@ Diana: I was never going to be other than The Invisible Ted! I was just going to upload me singing to here with no YouTube video – way too techie whizz for a bear! Anyhows, the voice is still croaky nasal with no Bellamy twang… I had another go in the cellar, but have not graduated back to the bathroom yet… I am working mi way up!

  29. Diana says:

@Jane: The world will have to wait a little longer then? Shame! Try at the foot of the stairs next with all the inside doors open – just like an ampitheatre then and you will get the full effect but do close all the windows. If you were going to upload to here without video would we be able to hear you? I was really looking forward to that as well as Muzza’s next contribution.

  30. Old Muzza(NW Surrey UK) says:

@Jane..26th..7:46…Yep me gal….I did go to Andy Turner but I couldn’t make head nor tail of what to do…..I did sign up……but can’t seem to find the ‘log in again….onlythe offer to sign up again
and I can’t find any blog comments to read (Until I make a comment)…
me non techie and have no idea what Rss feeds or podcasts are!
@Diana…..I’m sure I’ll have put a couple of songs on Youtube within 10 days…Just got to tidy the front room(Make space) so I can sit down somewhere!
(you think I am Joking…ask any of my friends…….(.what friends Muzza?)

  31. Jane Ramsden says:

@ Diana: I dunno if I’ll be able to paste a link to me singing a song, but Patrick Rose on here managed it without a YouTube video. (Has graduated since though, as I posted one of his on here not long since, & very good it was too!) I’m not sure I want to be ‘watched’ – ‘listened to’ is difficult enough. I have to like it missen first – a tall order!

@ Muzza: If I get ‘She Got It Where McDooley Got The Brick’ from Ameriky, you could do one of your magnifico music-hall YouTube performances to a song NO-ONE is singing anywhere else!

  32. Diana says:

@Jane so America came up trumps for you – I bet you were delighted – that finishes everything off for you doesn’t it? Unless you go round again and things would be different then.

  33. Old Muzza(NW Surrey UK) says:

@Jane………….I have a suitable brick waiting….just waiting for your American friends to tell me where to stick it!
My goodness………I note from above that I have been “MODERATED”.aaarrrgghh!!

  34. Jane Ramsden says:

@ Muzza: Well, we canny see your ‘moderation’ until it is unmoderated, but then ye are not noted for the former, are you? Hahahahahahaha! Also note, ‘she got IT, where McDooley got the brick’ so IT may be just an allusion to the rectangular object and you may not actually need one for the YouTube performance… you need not get your hod out just yet! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Anyhows, I have not got the song from Ameriky yet either, as I have had to read through a drove of ‘destructions’ about how to fill in the order form and what format I want said song in! It is likely however, that I will get music as well as ‘worms’ in with the no-doubt-exhorbitant price, but even if I don’t, I am sure you will know a tune to fit! If you don’t brick it! Herherherherheher!

  35. Old Muzza(NW Surrey UK) says:

@Jane………..Oh what a relief…I must confess I was a bit aprehensive as to my ability to accomodate a well placed ‘Sand faced fletton!”

  36. Jane Ramsden says:

@ Muzza: Them there ugly pink-red fletton bricks are London bricks. We are stoney-faced hereabouts in Yorksher! Hahahahahaha!

Ref your now-moderated comment, I just accessed Andy Turner’s site via Jon’s posted link then added to favourites. I clicked the ‘follow’ button in the bottom right-hand corner, so that I get emailed for each new posting. Apart from that, I have just mooched the songs/notes and not attempted to comment. If I go there, there will not be enough hours in the day!

Further ref your “Just got to tidy the front room (make space) so I can sit down somewhere! (You think I am joking…ask any of my friends…….(What friends Muzza?)” my gaff is also currently complete chaos, nay, degradation, what with the cats an’all! I have started cleaning it up, but I am not equal to the task which is going very slow, esp with a third round of AFSAD and other such sites added in! Aaaargh! I cannot decently invite anyone round, so just as well we have internet friends!

  37. Old Muzza(N.W.Surrey-UK) says:

Four years on and my house still a cluttery disaster and still not put ‘Flow sweet river flow’ onto youtube…..I had better hurry up as been putting off and only a few weeks left to upgrade to Windows 10 and have to relearn how to use the bally PC system again

  38. Old Muzza(N.W.Surrey UK) says:

House still in same state and I never did upgrade to windows 10…Microsoft willcut me off soon!

  39. OldMuzza(NWSurrey UK) says:

Well………….another three years have passed….no change in the cluttery house…but I have made a start on the giant Bamboo infested area that is optimistically called my garden
Can’t believe that dear old Dainer got one of my jokes way back then!. (the trifle joke)o

  40. Jane Ireland (Maryland, US) says:

@Good Old Muzza: Thanks for leaving a trail of breadcrumbs to get from June 23rd to June 24th!

  41. OldMuzza(NWSurrey UK) says:

Well done Jane Maryland……….your reward for following the breadcrumbs is another year of daily songs and the opportunity to comment if you so wish
I just tried to get back to23rd June but the system has scooped up all the breadcrumbs and takes you back to May!!!!
Anyway….we don’t need to worry until next year on 23rd…..(ooer- if we are still here…some of us are getting a bit ancient!)

  42. OldMuzza(NWSurrey UK) says:

Jane Maryland…so glad you put your location…certainly makes the comments column interesting….I have been campaigning for folk to do it for ages but only a few do.
whoa…just had a look at Maryland ..talk about a state split by Chesapeake bay…..joined by a bridge 4.25 miles long

  43. OldMuzza(NWSurreyUK) says:

Ahhhhhhh…now I see it……….in the song the young lady was being sarcastic and reminding him that he was more interested in the grey mare than her………so he should shake his fine curly mane and shove off! If only Daina had told me that ages ago!

  44. OldMuzza(NWSurrey UK) says:

Jane Ireland(Maryland)….hey Jane….I do hope you find (have found) the link to get through the next circuit of the songs and comments.

  45. Jane (Maryland) says:

Hey Muzza! Thanks to your link I found my way easily to “The Larks.” Looking forward to my third trip around the circuit!

  46. Linda says:

Hi Muzza hope you made it…….here we go again…..

  47. OldMuzza(NWSurreyUK) says:

Oh Lindy Lou….naughty gal……you peeked at the song a day ahead….yup…you me and Jane (Maryland ) made it .With this weather I’ll bet you still think that you are on the Greek Island!
    Wow…what a tan!
