Love this song, very funny – never heard it before as I am new to folk music. A song a day is such a brilliant idea, there must be many people like me who are hearing these for the first time. I will be listening every day.
I think Peter would have been delighted at this Jon. Magic!

I’ve had another quick delve into Andy Turner’s Folk Song A Week and this is his halfway-through synopsis. Nice mention of Jon’s project here, as well as Phil’s 52fs and a Liverpool project, which would also be worth exploring. Admitted under-representation of Northern songs, but think Jon gots that pretty well covered!
“So, six months in, I thought I’d have a quick review of the blog so far.
•I’ve posted 29 songs, although one of those was only 30 seconds long.
•I’ve classified 13 songs so far under Love Sex & Courtship and 5 under Crime & punishment. There have also been 6 carols
•Only 3 songs so far from the Copper Family, so plenty more to come from that source; another 3 from George Maynard and four from members of the Willett Family.
•Only 1 modern song, all the rest have been traditional. And of those traditional songs, 2 were Irish, all the others English – and pretty much all Southern English, at that (in fact all of them, I think, from the Southern half of England).
I have to say that, if anything, I’m now even more in awe of Jon Boden for managing to keep up A Folk Song A Day all through last year. A quick search suggests that few of the songs I’ve sung so far appeared on Jon’s blog; only these:
•Week 3 – Saucy Sailor > Saucy Sailor
•Week 11 – Spencer the Rover > Spencer The Rover
•Week 17 – The Holly and the Ivy > The Holly & The Ivy

Not sure that proves anything, except there are clearly more than 365 folk songs out there!

“Just deserts” are no trifles to play with. The phrase is related to “deserve”, not to sweets.
That is correct, “just desserts” means one gets what one deserves but it certainly is not a “desert.”
Sandy you could be right – I have consulted my very old dictionary and desert has three meanings l – a desolate place 2 – to forsake and 3 – to deserve as punishment or reward. I bet that not a lot of people know that. You can learn something new every day.
Still Young Roger got what he deserved which was nothing..

There are certainly loads of folk songs out there……I have a handwritten book of 300 songs that I like and have collected over many years of Folk on 2 and various tapes ..only a few have clashed with the AFSAD selection.
Jon has done it again…I Listened to Mike Harding 20thJune and what does JB sing…”Flow Sweet River Flow”…just as I get to the end of months of rehearsal of the same song and am about to stick it on Youtube….
I must say that my version is vastly different from Jon’s
i.e. he left a few verses out (or mixed and Matched them)

Right up our street! No, of course it is not me doing the singing. I have enough on without trying to sort out the techie whizz world of uploading to YouTube, apart from not knowing more than 2 verses of any song – like Shirley Collins’ aunt – and anyway, I would not inflict an all-singing, all-dancing Ted on this unsuspecting world! No costumes, and I could not go ‘bear!’
Muzza I am really upset now – you are not going on YouTube with “Sweet Thames flow solftly”. What a disappointment I was wound up for that. Like you say Jon and Sam’s version was a mix and match but Ewan MacColl wrote a final verse – albeit a sad one so perhaps their version was for the best.
A further blow if Jane is chickening out from her singing debut – I am sure she would be wonderful and then the two of you could duet. I cannot wait to see what a comeback she will make now.
@ Diana: I was never going to be other than The Invisible Ted! I was just going to upload me singing to here with no YouTube video – way too techie whizz for a bear! Anyhows, the voice is still croaky nasal with no Bellamy twang… I had another go in the cellar, but have not graduated back to the bathroom yet… I am working mi way up!
@Jane: The world will have to wait a little longer then? Shame! Try at the foot of the stairs next with all the inside doors open – just like an ampitheatre then and you will get the full effect but do close all the windows. If you were going to upload to here without video would we be able to hear you? I was really looking forward to that as well as Muzza’s next contribution.

@ Diana: I dunno if I’ll be able to paste a link to me singing a song, but Patrick Rose on here managed it without a YouTube video. (Has graduated since though, as I posted one of his on here not long since, & very good it was too!) I’m not sure I want to be ‘watched’ – ‘listened to’ is difficult enough. I have to like it missen first – a tall order!
@ Muzza: If I get ‘She Got It Where McDooley Got The Brick’ from Ameriky, you could do one of your magnifico music-hall YouTube performances to a song NO-ONE is singing anywhere else!

Anyhows, I have not got the song from Ameriky yet either, as I have had to read through a drove of ‘destructions’ about how to fill in the order form and what format I want said song in! It is likely however, that I will get music as well as ‘worms’ in with the no-doubt-exhorbitant price, but even if I don’t, I am sure you will know a tune to fit! If you don’t brick it! Ref your now-moderated comment, I just accessed Andy Turner’s site via Jon’s posted link then added to favourites. I clicked the ‘follow’ button in the bottom right-hand corner, so that I get emailed for each new posting. Apart from that, I have just mooched the songs/notes and not attempted to comment. If I go there, there will not be enough hours in the day!

I have started cleaning it up, but I am not equal to the task which is going very slow, esp with a third round of AFSAD and other such sites added in! Aaaargh! I cannot decently invite anyone round, so just as well we have internet friends!
Four years on and my house still a cluttery disaster and still not put ‘Flow sweet river flow’ onto youtube…..I had better hurry up as been putting off and only a few weeks left to upgrade to Windows 10 and have to relearn how to use the bally PC system again
