Bellowhead’s ‘A Bus Song A Day’

As I’m sure you’re already aware, Bellowhead are currently on an 18 date UK tour (with support from labelmates ahab). While on the tour they’ve started ‘A Bus Song A Day’ where they write and release a new video each day filmed while on the tour bus.

In Bellowhead’s own words:
A little bit of an insight in to life as a band on the road for 3 weeks. Every day Bellowhead members are aiming to write, perform and shoot/edit a video in the time it takes to get to the next gig. It beats I-Spy anyway!

You can watch the latest video below and keep updated on each new episode over on Bellowhead’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

This is amazing. Favourites so far are Brighton (cos I went to that gig) and Bilston for its ingenious use of John Leckie. Though the talking toastie-maker is pretty awesome too.

I’ll try a couple out at my local session soon.

I am loving these, although am getting rather a few bemused looks from the rest of the household as I roar with laugh at the computer!

  3. Diana says:

I find these very amusing as well but I expect it passes some time for the band too. It must get rather boring for them travelling from one town to another. Still it is rather enterprising of them and they may collect other fans along the way.

And here’s day 7 from Cambridge:

Got to say the talking toaster is my favourite, along with ‘It’s time for Bellowhead to go bed.’ How’d they get that toaster to open and close? Can’t see any strings!

  5. Mike Taylor says:

I don’t get it. In what sense is this folk music? I’m not being snarky, I am genuinely perplexed. I’m pretty new to folk, and I do appreciate that it’s a broad church, but if this folk, then what isn’t? Does it just mean “music”?

  6. Jane Ramsden says:

@ Mike: Welcome aboard! Stick with it and/or trawl back thorugh previous songs to ‘get’ what the whole project is about and the full taste of the broad ‘church’ that is folk! You’ll see various debates about that along the way! This is just a light-hearted addition of Bellowhead’s tour bus diary, a jolly rejoinder to the likes of the next song, ‘Unfortunate Lass,’ ‘cos folk is fun too!

In case you are very new, Jon Boden (who initiated this project) is a member of the Bellowhead ensemble. That’s why this is here, as many AFSADDERS will be seeing them along their tour… but sadly, not me this time!

  7. Simon says:

Mike, welcome aboard and to echo Jane’s words this is simply a humorous intermission from the serious undertaking of this website. Jon is presumably on the bus while this is going on, who knows he may even contribute. If you don’t know Bellowhead and the characters involved then you have a fair amount of catching up to do, but fear not, there are some good folks here who will help out. You may want to backtrack to the podcast post for more on Bellowhead with three members of the band being interviewed, it might help set the scene for you. Anyway I hope you’ll stick around as there’s much to enjoy coming up.

  8. Mike Taylor says:

So no-one calling that song “folk”?

  9. Jane Ramsden says:

@ Mike: I’d have called it a bit reggae missen, but I’m no expert on music genres!

Since no-one has really defined folk music on here (that debate having been shunned as a can of worms several times, but nonetheless discussed!) I’ve just Wiki-ed it. The entry at this link is actually quite an informative springboard for extra appreciation of songs in this undertaking:

Oh how we loved that toaster….

    Toastie Toastie….
