Young Roger Esquire

Day three and Young Roger Esquire, which Jon learnt from Peter Ballamy, as he explains…

“A real Bellamy tour-de-force of which, this is a pale imitation. Fantastic song though.”

Also known as Roger The Miller and The Grey Mare, you’ll find a Mudcat thread or two here. The lyrics are slightly differently constructed to the version Jon sings and there are even some extra verses.

Love this song, very funny – never heard it before as I am new to folk music. A song a day is such a brilliant idea, there must be many people like me who are hearing these for the first time. I will be listening every day.

  2. I think Peter would have been delighted at this Jon. Magic!

  3. Carol N says:

    Blooming marvellous!

A new song for me as well with a great ending. Keep them coming.

  5. Bee says:

Loving Roger’s ‘curly long hair’! And as Edith says – what a great ending!

Mr Bellamy would undoubtedly approve! A splendid rendition, well done Jon.

Very exciting project, well done! Cannot wait for some Child ballads!

  8. Jane Ramsden says:

A great rendition! Mare envy is a terrible thing! Ha ha! And I enjoyed reading the informative comments from yesterday too. There is a wealth of folk knowledge behind some of the listeners that I don’t have, so thanks to all for the comments as well as to Jon for the songs.

  9. Dear Jon, Love your stuff! Are you going to sing some sea songs and shanties?

  10. Rachel says:

Sorry William. Jon Boden is well known for his refusal to sing sea-shanties.

  11. Alan Rosevear says:

Only a week in and I have been inspired to learn this half-remembered song properly.Your Song a day project is a tremendous idea – we’ll be remebering your inspiration for as many years afterwards.

  12. Maureen Musson says:

@Rachel – eh? Fire Marengo, Haul Away, Roll Her Down the Bay to Julianna – to name but three.

  13. muzza(s.e.England) says:

My father-in-law threw in his grey mare, a couple of cows, a camel with a limp and a flock of sheep….and still I suspected nothing!

  14. Jane Ramsden says:

@ Muzza: hehehehehehe… the camel should have been a giveaway…

  15. Mike New says:

don’t know this one. Glad to have had the opportunity to listen again.
