Jon appeared on Radio 3 as a guest on Ian McMillan’s The Verb. You can hear Jon in conversation about this very project and also singing New York Girls, with Sam Sweeny adding fiddle (there’s some rather nifty guitar work from Jon too.) Here’s the i-player link, which should work until Friday. Jon is introduced into the mix at around 18 minutes in, although the conversation starts in earnest at the 20 minute mark. The course of the discussion, within the context of words and language is interesting and the whole segment lasts for about 12 minutes in total. The i-player may not be available outside of the UK for copyright reasons, so apologies if it doesn’t work for you. Of course were someone to grab it and post it elsewhere, not that I can endorse such shenanigans…

Thank goodness somebody has their wits about them..I ringed this to listen..and forgot to turn on!
I thought for a moment that Jon was saying..”don’t sing other peoples songs” but he clarified the situation later…Phew!(Hallelouhya!)
The link worked for me here in Canada. Very enjoyable it was, too. I was pleasantly surprised by a sweet, wistful version of “New York Girls” – and, yes, the guitar work is excellent. thanks very much for letting us know. cheers
Wonderful playing sir…
Thank you! Very good guitar, and I can now sing along to New York Girls, as heard it a few times.
Very good Verb too, so thanks for the signpost, as I am not well-organised enough to know what is up and coming without a pointer. First World War opener reminded me I have not yet ordered my John Tams’ Help the Heroes’ charity CD, so slap wrists and get out pen!
Fair points about the aural tradition of song-learning – made many a mistake missen over all sorts of songs. (Advert for Fairy washing up liquid. On hearing the jingle for this, I asked what does ‘judicious’ mean? That’s what I heard and was singing for ‘do dishes’ as a child – hahahaha!)
I (of course) enjoyed Ian McMillan’s dulcet accent, tho from Barnsley! He’s bin to ‘our house,’ as my partner has published poetry pamphlets of his many moons ago. If you read this, Ian, you haven’t met me, but David Tipton sends good wishes!
Programme ended on snow, very apt! Great guests next week. I think I am going to have to listen more. Thanks again, AFSAD!
